Chronic and Acute Pain Management Treatment

blog Dec 31, 2013

Pain is an indisputable part of life and in some ways it is not a negative thing. It is your body’s system for alerting you that there is a problem. Unfortunately, pain can also get out of control. Sometimes an ongoing tissue problem means that your body will not stop hurting in its attempt to warn you. Other times, a nervous disease makes your body think there is a tissue problem when there is not. Whatever the cause, pain can be debilitating. One important way to classify pain is chronic versus acute.

Evaluating the differences can help you understand the different methods of pain management treatment, which focuses on relieving the pain you feel by treating both the source of the problem and the pain itself.

Chronic pain is ongoing. It can be caused by many different diseases and disorders, but often includes nerve damage. This pain can be severe and because of its nature, it has a tendency to wear pain victims down until their overall health suffers. The fact that it is constant tends to make it more resistant to medical treatment. However, resistant pain can still be treated. With a proper diagnosis of the nature of your problem and with dedicated treatment, your pain can be relieved or significantly reduced. The pain management treatment may include anything from lifestyle changes to surgery, but a specialized physician can sit down with you to create a plan that will work for you and your life.

Acute pain is caused by something that has a limited duration. Injuries that will heal with time create acute pain. While acute pain management is temporary in nature, it should not be taken lightly. People who suffer from acute pain can find it so overwhelming that they cannot function. The treatments for this pain tend to be different than for chronic pain because generally the cause is not only understood, it is also healing. As long as the damage that is creating the pain continues to improve, treatment will probably focus on temporary pain relief. Although, some treatments may exist that will help the damage heal faster. As with those who suffer from chronic pain, one of the best ways to fight acute pain is to seek help from a physician who specializes in pain management treatment. With help, you can learn acute pain management and be able enjoy your life again.
